AUBiH Scholarship Fund

No student should be deprived of the opportunity of an education because of a lack of money. We invite individuals and corporations to donate funds that will ensure completion of four years of undergraduate study at the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina (AUBiH.) The university has set the ambitious target of providing full and partial scholarships for students representing all ethnic communities in this multi-ethnic country. AUBiH currently has three campuses (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, and Tuzla,) and is planning a fourth (Mostar). It is the only BiH university that caters to students from all parts of the country. Scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement and financial need, but consideration will also be given to expending on a diverse student body at each of these campuses.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is currently at peace, but it is an ethnically divided society, and that segrega¬tion extends deeply into the educational system, par¬ticularly at the tertiary level. Scholarships will provide funds for the support of a diverse university student body through the payment of tuition and fees, the pur¬chase of books, research materials and help in defray¬ing student living expenses. AUBiH fully understands that each donor might have different priorities and is willing to adapt this proposal to the needs of potential donors.

In the 2009¬/2010 school year the university conducted a survey of some 15, 000 graduating high school students to determine the level of interest in AUBiH. Among these respondents some 5,000 students expressed an interest in attending the university, and 3,900 of these were already studying English as part of their secondary school curriculum. Only a small fraction of this number come from families with the financial resources to cover the cost of this education.

This Scholarship Foundation builds on the success of a similar project entitled "Million Dollars for the American Dream" implemented by the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009. Over $1,000,000, gathered from the university’s own resources, were used to award 33 four year scholarships to the best high school students from across Bosnia and Herze¬govina. AUBIH continuously sets aside its own resources to fund education of gifted children.

American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina received many benefits from awarding scholarships, at AUBIH it is believed that scholarship students stimulate and challenge fellow students and faculty members. Scholarship recipients add vibrancy to the classrooms and raise standards of both learning and teaching at the American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With the "Million Dollars for the American Dream" project we were able to provide top notch education for exceptional students and attract students of great potential.

The American University in BiH is a distinguished mul¬tiethnic institution, which provides top quality education for all young people, regardless of their ethnic or religious background. Instruction is conducted in English by an American faculty and the program is designed to prepare students to be future leaders in the fields of business, finance, law, public service and other areas.

The scholarships awarded under this proposal will help create a critical mass of well trained and educated young individuals, who can take this country forward on its road to the European Union and NATO. By help¬ing to fund this program, you are directly supporting the process of transition of Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path towards democracy and economic prosperity.

The Concept

“Offering Dreams: Providing American Education in Post War Bosnia and Herzegovina” is a socially responsible project. It aims to advance development of a multiethnic society and further improve higher education in BiH by setting new standards in both the quality of education and linkage of corporate and individual giving for the benefit of all. The current public education system in BiH, especially at the university level, is not only segregated because of the consequences of the recent war and ethnic cleansing, but is also producing graduates with no real¬life experience and no concrete skills. The educational model is socialist in origin and focused on theory and quantitative learning. The American University of BiH, in contrast, is trying to change this by offering an American liberal education that prepares graduates to assume positions of leadership in business and government, serve as a catalyst for the political, social and economic development of the region and contribute to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s successful integration into the European Union. To that end, AUBiH promotes interaction within its diverse student body and campuses while integrating classroom learning and hands¬on experience to encourage the development of critical thinking and the creative problem solving skills.

Scholarships will not only create opportunities for worthy gifted to attend a leading BiH university, but also create and strengthen bridges and ties between the international community and Bosnia and Herzegovina. To further this connection and keep donors informed of its prog¬ress, AUBiH plans to prepare reports concerning funded scholarship students, along with photographs and up¬dates of their educational progress on a special web site dedicated to that purpose as well as recognize donors on the AUBiH’s own web page. Additional donor recognition is based on cumulative giving levels when funds are designated for scholarship purposes. Donors may provide outright scholarships or create an endowed scholarship fund through AUBiH, named in accordance with a donor’s wishes. The received funds will ensure that young and qualified people get a chance to complete their higher education and receive an inter¬nationally recognized diploma without studying abroad, and most likely never returning to their country.

Aladin Purić
Aladin Puric lost his father during the war. Throughout elementary and high school Aladin was honors student. His favorite subject was mathematics. Aladin says: “My mother and I had to lean on one another and to fight every day in order to survive. The most valuable thing I learned from this experience is that you should never surrender because only the ones who fight will survive. Ever since elementary school, I was very keen on mathematics mainly because it makes you think and develop your logic skills. Studying economics was my first choice. I tried hard to achieve that goal but even in my senior year of high school, I did not know how to do it. I saw my opportunity after I learned about “Million dollars for American dream”, which was a scholarship project by AUBIH. I felt incredible when I heard that I was awarded the scholarship. Studying at AUBIH is exactly how I imagined it to be. My professors are very kind, they are always there for you and they are very dedicated to what they do. The thing I also like is that they make you understand what they are teaching. University staff is also always ready to help us, even with things that are not directly linked to our studies. I wanted a top quality education and AUBIH stipend has made that possible. Now, I am exactly where I want to be: following the AUBIH path.”

Selma says: "I did not want to leave my country, family and friends but I wanted American – style education and American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina seemed like a perfect solution to my problem. Moreover, many people have recommended AUBIH to me. On top of it all, I was also awarded a scholarship at AUBIH, which made my studying a lot easier. I also started appreciating American University more, as well as people who have founded it. They (AUBIH) showed me that, by granting scholarships, they appreciate knowledge and people who have it and that their primary goal is to expand the knowledge in our country and not the profit."
